‘Duck Dynasty’ Publishes Church Curriculum Based on Show Themes

The Robertsons of A&E’s Duck Dynasty are wading into churches with their new curriculum, Faith Commander: Living Five Values From the Parables of Jesus, reports Charisma News. The five-week course will include a book and DVD with Robertson family stories and will focus on five themes in the parables of Jesus: faith, forgiveness, obedience, prayer and kindness.

Created by Kori Robertson, wife of Duck Commander’s CEO Willie Robertson, and her mother, Chrys Howard, the curriculum creates a churchwide experience for kids to adults. ““We chose the parables of Jesus because sometimes they are not always studied like they should be,” says Howard. “God put those in the Bible for us to learn from. Willie, Phil, Alan and, well, all the guys are great storytellers. In Faith Commander, they explain the parables as stories to bring people closer to God. We really believe that this is going to benefit the entire church family—kids, adults and teens. It’s something families can all study together just like they watch the TV show together.”

Casey Francis Harrell, director of corporate communications for HarperCollins Christian Publishing, told the Huffington Post that the curriculum isn't geared to any specific denomination, but is aimed at all Christians. Harrell also noted that Phil Robertson, who made headlines for comments about homosexuality, did not have input in the creation of the Faith Commander curriculum. "Nothing in this curriculum is seen as controversial," she said, in response to a question about whether the content would include any teachings on gay marriage, abortion, or contraception. The topics are not covered "as these are not part of the five values from the parables of Jesus," she explained.

For children, the curriculum is only available on DVD, and features a five-day bonus Vacation Bible School Program called "Willie's Redneck Rodeo: Lassoing the Heart of God." In addition, Faith Commander provides pastors with free sermons and other promotional resources.

The adult and teen studies will go on sale May 6, with the churchwide curriculum kit being available for purchase May 20.

Publication Date: February 4, 2014.
