Conservative Icon Phyllis Schlafly Dies at 92

Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly passed away September 5 at the age of 92 at her home in St. Louis.

The Eagle Forum, an advocacy organization Schlafly founded in 1972, confirmed her death.

Schlafly was known for her anti-feminist and conservative views. She rose to prominence as a leader of the conservative movement in the 1970’s.

She was a champion of traditional family values and worked to block the Equal Rights Amendment.

“Her focus from her earliest days until her final ones was protecting the family, which she understood as the building block of life. She recognized America as the greatest political embodiment of those values," the statement from the Eagle Forum read, according to CNN. "From military superiority and defense to immigration and trade; from unborn life to the nuclear family and parenthood, Phyllis Schlafly was a courageous and articulate voice for common sense and traditional values."

Schlafly remained active in politics up until her death. Recently, she created controversy by endorsing Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Responding to criticism from some conservatives regarding her endorsement of Trump, Schlafly stated, "I can remember 1980 when a lot of us didn't think Reagan was an authentic conservative. Reagan turned out to be best president of the century.”

Schlafly also wrote a well-known book titled A Choice, Not an Echo.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, the Eagle Forum reports. Schlafly died of cancer.
