Conflict between Christian and Muslim Refugees Prompts Germany to House Them Separately

Fighting between Christian and Muslim refugees in Germany has led German police to call for separate housing for the two groups.

Christian Today reports that Jörg Radek, deputy head of Germany’s police trade union, stated that police “have reached their absolute breaking point.”

Germany is taking in a large number of refugees, but President Joachim Gauck says there is a limit on the amount of aid Germany can offer.

"We want to help. We have a big heart. However, there is a limit to what we can do," he said. "Our ability to take in people is limited, although we don't know yet where those limits are."

Radek believes that housing Muslim and Christian refugees separately is a necessary step that “makes perfect sense.”

“We must do everything we can to prevent further outbreaks of violence,” he said.

According to Christian Today, 14 people were injured in a fight that broke out at a temporary housing center, housing 1,500 refugees in central Germany.

Many housing centers are overcrowded which makes it more likely that conflicts will occur.

"Our officials are increasingly being called to confrontations in refugee homes," Radek said. "When there are 4,000 people in a home which only actually has places for 750, this confinement then leads to aggression where even a tiny thing like the corridor to the toilet can lead to violence."
