Church of Lucifer Opens in Texas amid Protests

The first Greater Church of Lucifer opened in Old Town Spring, Texas on Friday (Oct. 30) amid protests from Christians around the country. The Huffington Post reports that the church opened its doors Friday night and performed its first service on Saturday.

About 20 church members dressed in black arrived for the first service.

Christians from the local area and all over the country gathered to protest the church’s opening. About 40 protesters carried signs and banners with slogans such as, “Satanism in NOT an American value” and “Life is short, death is sure, sin the cause, Christ the cure.”

Greater Church of Lucifer co-president Michael Ford told the Houston Press that members of the church do not actually worship Satan, but believe in finding truth.

"Lucifer is a symbol of self-liberated thinking, being different from the herd,” Ford said.

Christian Network News reports that the church does consider itself “within the scope of the occult,” according to its website.

It says, “We worship the Complete Self. We exalt in forbidden knowledge and the paths to power. Without the proverbial serpent in the tree, humanity would not be the incredible creature you see in the mirror.”
