A grand jury decided not to indict Officer Darren Wilson of any charges on Monday (Nov. 24). The decision prompted outrage from many and led to rioting, looting and burning buildings in Ferguson, Missouri.
Wilson shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9.
Christian leaders have now responded to the situation in Ferguson; many leaders turned to Twitter as a platform to offer words of spiritual guidance and prayers for peace.
President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Al Mohler wrote, “We are witnessing a portrait of civilization in meltdown. These images will be long seared into the nation’s conscience. They must be.”
From Christian author Jen Hatmaker: “The collective cries of the black community should move & grieve us, Church. We mourn with those who mourn & act justly, love mercy.”
President and CEO of World Relief Steven Bauman said, “We need each other now, black and white, to grieve, to empathize, to create a better tomorrow.”
Leith Anderson, President of the National Association of Evangelicals posted, “With heavy heart ... watched Ferguson on TV much of last night/this morning. Praying that God will bring unexpected good from all the pain.”
Authorities in Ferguson have recently reported that the violence that followed the jury decision has died down.
