A judge has ruled that a Catholic hospital group should be able to keep its anti-abortion policy, despite the lawsuit brought against it by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
SRNNews.com reports that the ACLU brought a lawsuit against Trinity Health Corp for putting women at risk with its anti-abortion policy.
However, Detroit federal Judge Gershwin Drain ruled that the ACLU did not have a sufficient case against Trinity.
Trinity’s lawyer, Kevin Theriot, said no one should be forced to perform abortions.
In his 13-page decision, given on Monday, Drain said the ACLU failed to detail what medical conditions would put women at risk due to Trinity’s anti-abortion policy. Drain said any harm the ACLU foresaw due to the anti-abortion policy was “speculative.”
The ACLU, however, maintains that Trinity is discriminating against women who may develop complications in their pregnancies. They are currently considering their options for appealing the case.
