Atheist Group Targets Clemson’s Christian Coach

The Freedom from Religion Foundation is planning to sue Clemson University over football coach Dabo Swinney’s Christian faith.

However, the atheist group has not been able to find a current or former player willing to testify against the coach.

“We filed a complaint [against Clemson] in 2014. At this point we don’t think the university has taken appropriate corrective action,” FFRF staff attorney Patrick Elliott told Breitbart News.

“We still have concerns about how that program is being conducted. The university needs to appropriately monitor religious activity in the program.”

Elliot said that the football team has a “church day” and that coaches are allowed to participate in team prayer.

In a column for Breitbart, Michael Patrick Leahy writes that the Freedom from Religion Foundation is made up of “militant atheists.”

In 2012, the Clemson football team was criticized after Deandre Hopkins asked to be saved and baptized at Clemson’s practice field.

“Football may be a religion, but faith is everything,” said Jeff Champion, a South Carolina fan. “Dabo is actually giving them something they can carry with them the rest of their lives. I’m just jealous that it’s them and not us.”

Two years later, FRFF filed a complaint.

“I’m very proud of the way we run our program and the culture that we have here and the young men that we develop here,” Swinney said in 2014. “To me, there’s already been too much talk about all that stuff. My statement is what it is.”
