Appeals Court Begins Deliberations for Meriam Ibrahim's Death Sentence

The capital punishment sentence for condemned Sudanese Christian Meriam Ibrahim is now being considered as the appeals court process has begun. Ibrahim was convicted of apostasy for refusing to renounce Christianity; she is the mother of a 20-month old son and an infant daughter, who was recently born in prison.

“Formal notification was given to myself and my lawyer that the appeals court has begun deliberation of Meriam’s case,” said Ibrahim’s husband Daniel Wani, an American citizen. Wani reports that the official notice was given June 5.

Wani remains hopeful that the international attention Ibrahim’s case has gleaned will “result in the judgment being overturned.”

Ibrahim’s husband also expressed the need to leave Sudan for the United States immediately after Ibrahim’s release if it comes. “I am scared for all our live -- me, my wife and my two children -- if we have to remain inside Sudan, even a day after her release,” he said.

Wani has appealed to New Hampshire senators to accelerate the asylum process when the time comes reports the Christian Post.
