Ancient Synagogue Unearthed in Mary Magdalene's Hometown

An ancient synagogue was recently unearthed in the hometown of Mary Magdalene.

Mary Magdalene is a prominent figure in the New Testament. There are a number of references to her following Jesus as he undertook his earthly ministry. She is also cited as one of the women who were with him at his crucifixion and brought spices to embalm him for burial.

She is even cited as the first person who saw the Lord after his resurrection (Mark 16:9).

Christian Today reports that the synagogue unearthed in her hometown is the only one from the first-century to be discovered in the area, and since the Bible says Jesus preached in the synagogues of Galilee, it is very likely that he preached and taught in this very place.

In addition to the synagogue, archaeologists found an ancient altar, called a “bimah,” and dubbed it “the Magdala Stone.”

Ancient coins and pots were also found, as well as a 2,000-year-old bowl that Jesus may have used to wash his hands before entering the synagogue.

Father Juan Solena, who purchased the land on which the synagogue was discovered, stated, “This is a holy site, I am sure of that."

"It is not for me,” Solena continued, “This is for millions of people that will come see this, will enjoy this as I did, and hopefully will be able to discover our common roots at the center."
